Marmara Denizi’nde 2021 yılında meydana gelen müsilaj krizi sonrasında “Marmara Denizi Eylem Planı” oluşturuldu. Plan kapsamında, Kasım 2021’de 1.2 milyon hektarlık bir alan “Marmara Denizi ve Adalar Özel Çevre Koruma Bölgesi” ilan edildi. Bu kararın ardından Marmara Denizi’nde müsilaj temizliği için büyük çapta bir çalışma başlatıldı. İzmit Körfezi’nde ise dip çamuru temizliği projesi gibi önemli çevre projeleri hayata geçirildi.
İstanbul Üniversitesi Su Bilimleri Fakültesi’nde görevli akademisyenler ve diğer üniversitelerden gelen akademisyenler, bölgedeki biyolojik çeşitliliği araştırmak için çalışmalar yaptılar. Bu araştırmalar sonucunda, Marmara Bölgesi’ndeki adalarda 9’u endemik olmak üzere 815 bitki türü, koruma altında olan 10 sürüngen, 51 memeli türü tespit edildi. Ayrıca, farklı adalarda ve yarımadalarda birçok kuş türü belirlendi.
Bölgenin uluslararası ölçekte önemli bir biyolojik koridor olduğu ve Karadeniz ve Akdeniz’in biyolojik çeşitliliği için büyük bir değer taşıdığı vurgulandı. Bu nedenle, bölgenin korunması gereken nadir alanlardan biri olduğu belirtildi.
Yeni kararla birlikte, Balıkesir, Çanakkale ve Tekirdağ illerindeki bazı orman alanları da ÖÇKB’ye dahil edildi. Bu alanlar, özel çevre koruma bölgesi statüsüne alınarak koruma altına alındı.
Çevre, Şehircilik ve İklim Değişikliği Bakanlığı, Marmara Denizi’nde ekosistemin restorasyonunu sağlayacak önlemleri alacak ve bölgenin yaşamsal döngüsünü devam ettirmek için bilimsel çalışmaları destekleyecek. Bu kararla birlikte, Marmara Denizi ve Adalar Özel Çevre Koruma Bölgesi’nin sınırları genişletilmiş oldu.
